A few years ago, virtual was the only way to go if you wanted to throw a fundraiser. We are guessing it was not easy to make that shift, but non-profit organizations that have gone virtual discovered the secret weapon to their fundraising success: live streaming.

Think about it: there is a limit to how many seats you can fill in a room, but there is no limit to the number of viewers that can tune into a live stream (there is also no dress code which people love these days).

Here are 7 ways to effectively use live streaming for your next fundraising event:

  1. Storytelling: When it comes to fundraising, people crave compelling stories that touch their hearts. Use live streaming as a platform to share impactful narratives about the individuals or communities you are supporting. Interview beneficiaries, volunteers, or even celebrity ambassadors to showcase the positive change your cause is making. Speak from the heart, keep it real, and let the stories resonate with your viewers.
  2. Gamify the Experience: Inject some fun and excitement into your fundraising event by gamifying the live stream. Create challenges, quizzes, or competitions for viewers to participate in. Give prizes or shout-outs for those who contribute. Include a live or silent auction with items or experiences being awarded to the highest bidder. Incorporating a friendly competition can increase engagement, drive donations, and create a memorable experience for everyone involved.
  3. Social Sharing: Live streaming events can be easily shared on social media platforms. Encouraging viewers to share, repost, and use a designated hashtag is an effective way to gain exposure. This helps create buzz around the event and encourages more people to donate to your mission.
  4. Collaborate and Leverage Influencers: Consider teaming up with celebrities or influencers who align with your cause. Invite them to participate in your live stream by sharing personal stories, performing, or offering exclusive opportunities like one-on-ones. Their involvement can expand your reach, attract new supporters, and bring fresh perspectives to your fundraising efforts. Be sure to acknowledge their contribution and express your gratitude during the live stream. *Pro Tip: Shout them out again after the event on social media and other platforms to continue creating interest and instilling some “FOMO” in those who missed the live event!
  5. Keep it Concise & Engaging: Plan a structured agenda to keep your live stream concise and dynamic. Incorporate diverse content, including live performances, testimonials, interviews, pre-recorded content, and captivating visuals to maintain the viewer interest and drive engagement.
  6. Leverage Donation Features and Calls to Action: Integrate donation features directly into your live stream platform to facilitate easy giving. This can include links, buttons, and simple instructions to ensure viewers can donate with just a couple clicks as they watch. Clearly communicate your fundraising goals and revisit your goals with progress updates and reminders to donate. Implementing compelling calls to action will encourage immediate support from your viewers.
  7. Continue the Drive: Keep in mind, it is not over when you end the live stream, so plan action steps for post-event. Share the recorded live stream and post key moments or achievements after the event to keep the momentum going.  Create a highlight reel to intrigue those who missed the event and for use in promoting the next one.

By applying these tips for your next live streamed fundraiser, you will increase your reach, engagement, and your donations. Do not lose out on an opportunity to reach a wider audience (not to mention those who may just prefer not to wear pants – hey, we are not judging). Even if you have your next fundraiser planned as an in-person event, get the best of both worlds and live stream it too!
